About DOM_BIRD

DOM_BIRD is one of the oldest poultry groups on the internet. Founded in 1995 when many people could barely spell "Internet" (calling it the "Inner-Net"), let alone use it, DOM_BIRD started as an email mailing list. I distinctly remember one lady who was a member of the PBCPFA (more on them later) who kept calling it the "Inter-Noodle". With an email forum, you would send your message to a special email address and the server would in turn copy and send your email message to hundreds of DOM_BIRD group subscribers.

Our mailing list server was originally hosted by a server in Poland run by an organization called the PoLish European Academic and Research Network (PLEARN). These were great people and did not ask anything in return to host DOM_BIRD on their server. Sadly, the party ended in 2000 when PLEARN was shut down. At that time, DOM_BIRD moved to eGroups which was bought out by Yahoo that same year. We were with Yahoo Groups until almost 2009 when we went to Google groups. The email version of DOM_BIRD has been on Google Groups ever since. Sadly, the popularity of email groups has declined in favor of web based forums and other social media like FaceBook. The email version of DOM_BIRD still exists and if you are interested, you can join by going to https://groups.google.com/g/dom_bird.

Now about the PBCPFA

This is the Palm Beach County Poultry Fanciers Association based in Palm Beach County, Florida. I became a member roughly about the same time that I joined DOM_BIRD. Because I was literate in technical matters, I was given the task of creating the group's first web site. This was hosted on the Alachua Free Net Servers as http://afn.org/~poultry. The group was primarily a local poultry group, but thanks to the group web site, we had members from as far away as Australia.

Later, I left the PBCPFA group and turned the passwords over to the president of the club, but the site was never updated. Eventually, in 2007, Alachua Free Net was shut down and the club's website went away with it. This DOM_BIRD website was once intermingled with the PBCPFA, but not since about 2000. I was told that they set up a new website, but I haven't been able to find it. The most logical domain name would have been "pbcpfa.org" but that is a different group with the same initials. Today, the closest thing I can find to an internet presence is a Facebook page located at: https://www.facebook.com/PoultryFanciers.

Last I heard, they are no longer accepting memberships from outside of Florida, but I could be wrong. I'm told that they still have meetings every 4th Friday of the month at 7:00 PM at the Mounts Botanical Garden building located at 531 North Military Trail, West Palm Beach, FL 33415. If you want to contact the person in charge of the group, the last email I have is for Inger Lewis who is/was an officer of the club.
